5 Fabulous Ideas That Will Save You Money On a Move!
Moving can be a high stress experience for some people that aren’t prepared for unplanned for costs. So we have some ideas for a fun, short read in which you can take control of your move and your bank account, rather than the move take control of you and drain the bank. The following are the fab five of what we think are pretty sweet ideas to save you time and money on your moving process!
1:
For an avid book reader and lover that doesn't want to get rid of their library, this is amazing. Did you know the US Postal Service offers something called Media Mail? This service provides for you to ship 70 books for just $40.00! Talk about moving your home library cheaply! You get the bang for your buck and keep your beloved books!
2:
Did you know you can search on Google an online moving calculator that you can fill out and it will calculate an estimate of how much your move should cost you? Some examples of what you will find are my.consumeraffairs.com moving cost calculator, moving.com has a resource to calculate costs of moving out of state, forbes.com has a moving cost calculator too, as well as realtor.com. This way you don’t accept a bid that is way high, but note it’s not advisable to take the lowest bid either. Ever hear of a movers nightmare where expensive items were ruined and not replaced by the mover? It happens. So we recommend this is a huge do your homework strategy for a money and stress saver!
3.
Don’t forget to cancel your utilities and cable/internet service providers so you aren’t paying the old home and new home at the same time. If you’re lucky enough to keep a provider they will sometimes give you a cost savings to cancel and start anew at the same time.
4.
Before you pack and spend money on shipping it all, think about what clothes do I not wear anymore, do I still need that pack and play, that old guitar, and more. Sell, sell, sell these items, whether it is a garage sale, a clothing resale shop, in Livingston County there is a Just for Men’s resale shop that has much random items, a pawn shop, Facebook Marketplace, and so many more options! Some of these sales could cover moving expenses! Then whatever is left you can donate it and feel good about making money, helping others, and less to pack and pay for that space in a larger moving truck!
5.
Lastly, packing materials and boxes can add up to a hefty penny. A little hack for this, one of us has had personal success with, is calling on grocery stores! Some of them welcome you with open arms to relieve them of all their weekly shipment boxes after they have unloaded their products on the shelves. You can call ahead and set it up for the following week. Another tip is to ask for social media friends to rid their homes of boxes and packing materials if they just recently made a move and hadn’t gotten rid of it all yet.
We hope some of these fun ideas were fresh and a new little light bulbs that went off for you on how to save money when you make your next move. Happy moving!
